2008 Canutillo High School Graduation

Canutillo High School Graduates Largest Class Ever…

Canutillo Independent School District (CISD) celebrated the largest class to participate in Canutillo High School commencement exercises in its 49-year history as 328 seniors walked the stage before a stadium-filled audience of about 6,000 proud parents, family members, and friends, Friday, June 6, at CHS\'s beautiful Julius & Irene Lowenberg Eagles Stadium.

Canutillo ISD was started in 1959 and graduated its first CHS senior class in 1963. Before 1959, students attended El Paso County\'s Lone Star Elementary School in Canutillo and had to travel to El Paso High School if they wanted to continue their education after eighth grade.

Leading the Class of 2008 through this auspicious evening event were Miriam Garcia, valedictorian, and Erika White, salutatorian. The two top students were the featured speakers as they shared the stage with the CHS Principal, CISD Board of Trustees, Superintendent and administrators.

Garcia also led in the amount of scholarship monies garnered by her class. Among a list of scholarship awards she received is the 2008 Gates Millennium Scholarship, which will provide financial assistance throughout her college career. She plans to attend Baylor University in Waco, Texas beginning in the fall, where she will major in biology and work towards a medical degree.

"I am extremely happy and relieved to have been chosen as a Gates Millennium Scholar. This award will relieve my family and me of a huge financial burden and will allow me to expand my educational horizon," said Garcia.

The Salutatorian said that she accepted a merit-based scholarship to attend St. Mary\'s University in San Antonio. White added that her plans are to major in biology and pursue a medical degree.

The Class of 2008 graduates received nearly $6 million in scholarships and grants. Jaime Montes was awarded a scholarship by the University of Notre Dame. Karla Aguirre received the University of Texas at Austin Longhorn Scholarship. Alfonso Frias III, Ismael Lopez, and Kyle Miller were awarded scholarships to the University of Texas at El Paso. Brandon Reid and Regino Ramos III received scholarships to Texas Tech University.

Other CHS graduates receiving university scholarships include Noemi Limones, Houston Baptist University; Nolberto Padilla, Johnson & Wales University; Maria Zamarron, New Mexico Highlands University; Ana Nuefeld, New Mexico State University; Kayla Hinson, Our Lady of Corpus Christi University; Jamaysa Ricci, Our Lady of the Lake University; Richard Deval, St. Mary’s University; Jonna Booth, University of Minnesota at Morris; Eddie Rascon, Fernie De La Rosa, and Drew Norris were awarded scholarships to Western New Mexico University.
